How it works

Network      Client      Policy Manager      WebTop      RDA

User Experience
Each end user can access the corporate network in three ways, using the PositivePRO Client, using the PositivePRO WebTop, or using PositivePRO RDA (remote desktop agent). In each case, authentication, security checks and policy enforcement are applied by Positive, inside the Positive POP before traffic is directed to your enterprise network.

The Positive Client
The Positive Client is initially downloaded by the user from Positive's Web site. It runs in the background with a small memory footprint and does not interfere with use of the user's PC. It incorporates all of the logic needed to carry out the instructions from the Policy Manager and it remains in real-time communication with the Policy Manager when a user in signed-on to ensure that all Policies and Configuration Settings are in place, and invokes Actions as directed.

Integrated with the Positive Client are all necessary VPN drivers, the Positive end-user firewall, powerful anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, critical updates software and other Positive security modules. This also includes any productivity applications the customer has signed up for, such as Application Distribution, Positive Networks Backup, and the Positive Private File Area.
Upon user sign-in, the client, following instructions from the Policy Manager, reconfigures the user's desktop to "Work Mode." Reconfiguring the user environment in this way is what makes PositivePRO easy, foolproof and secure.

Desktop Configuration

The reconfiguration process automatically sets up and enforces everything the user needs to work securely and productively:

  • Firewall with appropriate firewall rules
  • Anti-virus with current DAT files
  • Spyware protection
  • Critical updates from Microsoft
  • Drive maps to enterprise file shares
  • Background and shortcuts
  • IE setup - Home page and bookmarks and proxy
  • Access to mission critical applications
  • Email configuration (e.g. Outlook or Groupwise)

Each of these changes is to the user's native Windows environment (e.g. drive maps will appear in "My Computer" as they do in the office). Thus each user can continue to work the way he is accustomed, without any new learning required.

The Policy Manager keeps track of all original state information, so that after sign-off, the user's system is automatically restored to its original, local condition, and all remnants of the VPN session are removed as a security precaution.
