Overland Park Company Collects 70,000 Crayons and 700 Pictures for Kids at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics
OVERLAND PARK , Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 2006—Positive Networks, a leading remote access and endpoint security technology company hosted their first ever “Crayon Drive” to benefit the patients at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and clinics.
“Every child in our care at one time or another is invited to color with crayons,” said Children’s Mercy Outreach Coordinator Lynn Hardy. “In the clinics alone, that is more than 250,000 children per year. Because of health concerns, we constantly need access to brand new crayons. Coloring is a wonderful creative outlet and great way for children in the hospital and in waiting rooms to pass the time.”
Employees at Positive Networks learned about the hospital’s unique need and sprang to action. Two contests were created to boost support for the young patients at Children’s Mercy - the first was the number of crayons collected and the second was the number of pictures colored. Employees divided into four teams, each representing a different color. A departmental pizza party was awarded to the “blue” team (operations department) who submitted over 600 colored pictures. The “green” team (development) won lunch with CEO Tim Sutton for collecting over 25,000 crayons in a two week period.
“We wanted to create something fun in which everyone could participate and bring smiles to the patients at Children’s Mercy,” said planning committee member and Vice President of Service Delivery Jason Sloderbeck. “The Crayon Drive turned out to be even more competitive than we had anticipated. Employees were coloring during lunch breaks and running to nearby stores for more crayons as other teams caught up. One team member even garnered the support of Rochester Elementary who helped color 400 pictures for the cause. ”
Although crayons aren’t a common donation, Children’s Mercy volunteers are in constant need of these types of supplies. The planning committee felt the campaign was a huge success. According to Hardy, Positive Networks’ donation was the largest donation of crayons that Children’s Mercy has ever received.
Positive Networks has a strong relationship with Children’s Mercy. Physicians and nurses use the Positive Networks remote access service to access patient records, track medical charts and record patient information from any location in their system or from a home computer. This service makes it possible for Children’s Mercy to securely access all resources, and distribute critical data with the click of a mouse while complying with HIPAA laws for patient medical records privacy.
