Remote Access
Remote Access
is the ability to get access to a computer or network from a remote location using a vpn. Remote access can mean creating connectivity between a laptop computer and a company’s Local Area Network (LAN), giving the user remote desktop access. A home computer user might use remote access to connect to the Internet using an Internet service provider (ISP). Dial-up connection through desktop, notebook, or handheld computer modem over regular telephone lines is another common method. In order for a remote access connection to take place safely, an SSL protocol should be included in the technology. Also, a username and password is required to authenticate the connecting user to insure endpoint security.
Remote Desktop Access is more than just being able to connect to another machine – it now commonly means the ability to control the machine once the secure connection has been made. It can basically transform your local computer into the remote computer you connect to. This is usually an effective way for employees who work from home or any other location, to use their work computers using home pcs, or laptops. However, many corporate IT departments do not like this rogue remote access because of a lack of
endpoint security enforcement. This method also assumes that the remote control computer is left on at the office which can pose a security risk. A more common method is a VPN.
Remote access is growing in organizations of all sizes as people are required to stay connected but more frequently are working from branch offices, by telecommuting from home, or when on the road traveling.
